MPA Europe at ECCWO5 in Norway

19/04/2023

Several members of the MPA Europe project are attending the Effects of Climate Change on the World’s Ocean Conference in Bergen, Norway 16-21 April.

The science symposium focuses on how the ocean is changing, the ecosystems at risk, and strategies to mitigate impacts.  The event features topics relevant to the MPA Europe project such as species distribution models, blue carbon, and policy.  Mark Costello and Sunni Heikes-Knapton with Nord University and Jorge Assis with CCMAR are attending in person, and Silas Principe with UNESCO OBIS is attending online.

There is a growing community of researchers applying statistical models to species distribution mapping, reporting on observed changes in species distributions due to climate change, and furthering understanding of climate change impacts, including species which may and may not benefit (so called “winners and losers”). Learning of the latest researchers and making new contacts with other experts will help the MPA Europe project apply the best practices in its research.
