The Global Reach of MPA Europe’s Research on Marine Protected Areas

23/04/2024

A new study by Professor Mark Costello, MPA Europe’s coordinator, is making headlines around the world. It highlights that Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) not only help the environment but also bring economic benefits to fisheries and tourism. The original study reviews 81 publications from 37 countries, showing positive impacts on local economies and fish populations.

The first media article, “Marine protected areas safeguard more than ecology – they bring economic benefits to fisheries and tourism”, is garnering attention by showing how MPAs can boost fish stocks and local economies. This goes against the common view that MPAs are economically unviable.

Since its release, media outlets across over 45 countries, including the USA, France, Germany, India, and Brazil, have covered the study. Big names like HuffPost France and BFM TV have run stories on this study. For example, BFM TV highlighted how MPAs boost the economy, changing the typical narrative that they harm local fisheries.

Coverage by InfoDurable and La Vanguardia also focused on how MPAs support both economic growth and biodiversity conservation, showing that they don’t harm fishing businesses but help them. Carbon Pulse and The National News discussed the study’s point on how MPAs can significantly contribute to national GDPs through tourism and better fishing practices.

This wide media attention shows a growing global agreement on the importance of MPAs not just for ecological health but as vital economic assets. As the study’s findings spread, they are reshaping how people and policymakers think about the balance between marine conservation and economic activity.

Professor Costello’s research is proving to be a stepping stone for how the world sees and uses MPAs, showing that they are not only good for nature but also for business.
